The game of Chess originated in India. The Persian word for chess, satranj,is derived from the Sanskrit word 'Chaturanga' which means "four divisions of the military" ( infantry, cavalry, elephants and chariots), represented respectively by Pawn, Knight, Bishop and Rook.
